NinkiCZ's Blog
Published on May 16, 2010 By OMG_NinkiCZ In Demigod

Welcome to our clan. We are the biggest and best clan in Demigod, and arguably the only clan with any hope of survival. What is our goal? To get games going without the ridiculous wait times, meet lots of cool people, and last but not least, have lots of fun. If you want a clan based on skill, you won't find one in this game.

Q: Are you the clan leader?

No, absolutely not. GM worked as a democracy, and the same deal goes here - majority rules. I am just your Public Relations (PR) guy. I have noticed that having a solid PR guy does keep the clan intact, and I have made sure I am pretty much accessible and visible as often as I can. I am on msn, xfire, skype, facebook and vent. If you need to find me, you probably will find me and of course I'll allow you to find me. Just ask if you're interested.

Q: What is the recruitment process?

There is no recruitment process, we will accept anyone who wants to join. Just add the tag, hop onto vent, say Hi and I'll add you on here. If you want I can serenade your entrance to the clan with a song of your personal choice, but it must be Top 40.

Q: Are there any rules?

1. Be nice, be respectful of others. I understand trash talking is part of the game for some, but please don't extend it to something personal. It's just a game after all.

2. Unless there is an agreement among the players in the game, please play balanced games. I understand that completely balanced games are probably not possible at the moment, but try to make it as balanced as possible.

3. Have fun!

If there are anymore questions, feel free to ask away!

Here are the current members of OMG (in alphabetical order):

OMG_awuffleablehedgie (a.k.a. OMG_BlackHatHedgehog)

So I used to refer to him as waffles, because I always thought his name was supposed to relate to waffles. Apparently, I was wrong. He's wuffleable - which means huggable apparently. I'm not sure how a hedgehog is huggable, but I guess it is in his world. Hedgie is his nickname, and he's probably the coldest person in this clan, but once you get used to his cold exterior, he turns out to be a really nice guy. He just has these awkward mood swings, where he's super energetic around 10pm EST, and then after 12am, he tends to be super cynical, and then after 3am he turns on his seductive bedroom voice. If you feel offended by him, don't be, because he's just a hedgehog. If you have any questions about any statistical stuff in Demigod, Hedgie knows all. It's actually kinda scary.

OMG_Blackmage (a.k.a. OMG_synnworld)

OMG-CaptainTaco

Taco was an important addition to the clan because he provides the comic relief for everyone. Just look for his posts and you will instantly know what I mean. He likes to describe himself as a terrible DG player, but he only says that just so his opponents will let their guard down and then Taco can strike. I always knew he was a sneaky guy, right when I saw his Pedobear avatar. As you can tell from his name, he loves Tacos but I'm not sure how strong that love is. In fact, none of us really know if his love for Tacos is stronger than tacoguy's. That is a question up for further discussion.

OMG_Defenz

A player from Vancouver. That's all I really know so far but if you're Canadian then that automatically makes you cool.

OMG-dontforgetyourpeanuts

I have a feeling this guy is loaded.

OMG_Epiphenomenon

Epi is what we all call him, so I suppose that's his nickname. He's the brains of the group, Mr.PhD in computer science. I will be joining him in September (hopefully if I survive the summer) but until then he is above me academically. I shall be your colleague soon Epi! He is the voice of reason. He's very mature and civilized, so I'm not really sure why he's a gamer (haha juust kidding). He is currently my academic advisor, even though he never agreed to it. But who cares, I'm sure he'll agree cause he's a nice guy. If you need academic advice, I suggest you go to Epi.

OMG-howboutnoooo

We all call him Max, because that's his name. He is the dog of the family - and that is not to say that he plays an unimportant role. Dogs are a man's best friend and they are extremely friendly, just like Max. Sometimes when you listen to him you might think he's on LSD, but really he's naturally just like that. He sees the world in magical ways, and he opens up your mind to a whole new world. He's also extremely active - as in he's pretty hyper and is always energetic until around 11pm when he usually goes to bed. I initally made fun of Max for sleeping so early as a teenager, but once I realized how much energy he spends just talking I understand why he's exhausted by the end of the day. If you are feeling down, go talk to Max. He is the guy in the clan who will cheer you up.

OMG__IN1

OMG_Jackho

OMG_Jona

Jona is just Jona. He's the drama queen. Yes, believe it or not I am not the biggest drama queen, he is and he's damn proud of it. From just 3 minutes of talking to him, you'd realize that he likes to put himself on the pedestal, and he does. But even with all that attitude, he's a lot of fun to hang out with. Listening to him on vent always makes my day. He also never rage quits, and never actually gets angry - which is kind of surprising now that I think about it. He also has nice eyes that he cherishes, I'm not sure if that makes a difference.

OMG_Jongalt26

Nickname is Jon. One continuous question that has been floating around is this, "Who would win in a fight against Jon, KAL-EL and yeahneil?" That is an answer no one has been able to answer yet. Those 3 in my mind are the tough trios - but really, they're all actually probably the nicest people in the clan right from the get go. I'm not going to lie, I was scared to talk to them initially but after maybe.. 2 days? I got comfortable with them. Jon to me is a wonderful fatherly figure so he is definitely the father of the family.

OMG_KAL-EL

His name is pronounced just like the way it's spelled. If Jon is our father, KAL-EL is probably our grandfather, except he's not even that old. So why do I call him the grandfather? Because he has so many people that support him that you can't help but admit that there's something about KAL-EL that makes people like him. The answer becomes quite obvious when you engage in a conversation with him. He always keeps it real, and is genuinely friendly. I still have a hard time matching his friendliness with his tough voice but I'm getting there.

OMG_Mybones

A fellow gleek, and although there are some disagreements between us about who the best character in glee is (obviously Rachel, but he refuses to admit her greatness), as long as he is a fan of glee, I am a fan of him.

OMG_NinkiCZ

I'm just your average joe who's Asian. I'm quite boring so let's move on to someone more interesting.

OMG_Nomilarac

OMG_Obiwhan

I've actually always wanted to meet Obi (his nickname) after yeahneil was making fun of my voice and mentioned that he also makes fun of Obi's. When I actually got to meet him, he wasn't quite what I expected because contrary to what yeahneil thinks, he just had a normal voice. Obi is one of the few that makes me literally LOL. I sometimes do wonder if he's telling me the truth about his age though. You'd understand if you've known him long enough. He is the joker. No, not the joker from Batman, but an actual guy who makes jokes. However, his jokes are NSFW - Not Safe For Work, so be careful.

OMG_pacov

There really isn't much to say about pacov because for anyone that comes to these forums, you really can't miss his name. I've never gotten to know him on a personal level, but from my encounters with him he's quite a wonderful person. I consider him the father of Demigod, as do most people I'm sure because he plays such an active role in this community. I've always wanted to get to know you myself and I'm glad that the opportunity has arrived. I shall definitely update this introduction after we become familiar with each other. I also did not think you were the type to listen to Ke$ha. From your posts, I always thought you were more the old skool type - so there's definitely lots of things for me to learn.

OMG_Pa1nKi11er

This is irek, yo.

OMG_RedneckNinja

OMG_DD-shred_demon

If you don't know who shred_demon is then you are definitely missing out. He is actually the real Gentleman. He has a beautiful Scottish accent and loves to drink tea. He cannot live without his tea. He is also extremely skilled with his use of emoticons (the best in DG?) and we all have lots to learn from him. I've never heard him get angry, he's always smiling in my mind and he always puts a smile on my face. Therefore, if you are feeling down, talk to shreddy. He is the clan's sun (yes as in the big thing that shines the world), but you'll have to ignore his strong desire to wear a skirt and become a transformer.

OMG_Soccer-mom

I remember seeing the name Soccer-mom on Lagwars and thinking what kind of a person would want to be known as a soccer mom. Although his name is a bit weird, he actually is nothing like his name on vent. First, he's not a mom. Second, he's not even a parent. Third, I'm not even sure if he likes soccer. He's actually one of the younger guys on vent but surprisingly is one of the most mature guys on there too. I suppose it has to do with the fact that he studies physics (which I think is absolutely amazing because I suck at physics). If you want to delve into a discussion on quantum theory, talk to him.

OMG_SoSick

Another Canadian from Edmonton, which makes him cool. Quite a laid back sorta guy, who's apparently an excellent cook. He kind of reminds me of jaws8you (who seemed to have disappeared somewhere) but without the sighing and he also never gets mad. He is a great guy to play games with because he's a great listener, always calm and even takes responsibility for his mistakes - which is quite a rare sight in Demigod, and even in life. He has almost made drastic improvements over these weeks and I'm sure he'll be excellent in no time.

OMG_Splitshadow

Don't be fooled by his age. Kids his age should be listening to Justin Bieber and Miley Cyrus, yet he chooses to listen to Proud Mary by CCR. He likes to blame me for not being on vent, when in fact I am always on and I do pm him from time to time yet he chooses to ignore my messages, probably from Maccilia's terrible influence. He says he can tell a lot about you from your voice, so you should ask him for a personality diagnosis if you're interested.

OMG_Teseer

Everytime I talk to Teseer on vent, he seems like a completely different person. If you look over his posts you can tell that most of the time he's under the influence of some sort of substance, which could explain why he's a different person each time. While he sounds like a tough dude, he's not aggressive at all and I don't think I've ever heard him get mad. He also has this disgusting passion for TB, it's kind of to the point where it's a bit obsessive in my opinion. If you have any questions about TB, ask this man. Provide him with TB replays and he'll be very pleased.

OMG_Zalera (a.k.a. OMG_Sol)

He's barely on so how am I supposed to know anything about him. All I know is that he pops up in the forums once in a while and he seems to be BFFs with Splitshadow.

OMG_Zelax_

OMG_Zex (a.k.a. Cowbuttzex)

I always thought cow was a weird guy because he's the only person who seems to get along with Peter, but when you talk to him he's actually quite normal. I think it's because he's very accepting of everyone, as you can tell from being our first ever member of the week. If you don't know who to talk to when you come onto vent, the first person I would suggest is cow, because he's very considerate and would do his best to include you in games. He's also very encouraging and I think he plays a vital role in merging the members of the clan together.

You could go with the PCIe SSD's but the price per gigabyte is a lot higher.  I wouldn't consider it first gen tech at this point though, there have been a couple of cards out for at least a year.  I would just be concerned with bootability etc.

I would recommend going with one 240-256 gig ssd.  You could go with one 120 gig ssd but you'll be doing the software shuffle depending on what games you are currently playing.

You could go raid 0 (which is what i did since the 240+ size ones were out of stock at the purchase time).  Raid 0 for ssd's won't provide that much of a benefit (ie 10% +/-)over a non-raid drive.  The benefit really shows if you use a raid card, and said raid card has it's own processor.  I really don't think the price/performance is really necessary though to warrant the purchase of a raid card.  Also, the trim command that is with win 7 won't pass into a raid system so you are relying on the low level garbage clean-up algorithms of the drives (which are getting better) and you have to manually clean-up the raid on occassion by using ccleaner's (or similar) wipe utility.

With that said, you definitely want an SSD with a sandforce controller.    It might be prudent to hold off for a couple of months though, if i remember correctly an updated sandforce controller is coming out soon but don't quote me on that.  I would definitely look it up to verify, i just have a vague memory of hearing something.   It's also difficult to verify which controller is used in each drive however the read/write speeds will kinda tell you, then you can visit the manuf. site for verification.

Now on to the recommendations.

Currently I have 3 different ssd's, an Intel X-25m (2nd gen) in my wife's laptop, OCZ vertex 1 in my primary computer and OCZ vertex 2 in my HTPC.  Those are also listed in the slowest to fastest order.  The vertex uses an older indilinx controller.  The Vertex 2 uses the sandforce controller and it's wicked fast, noticeable faster than the vertex 1.  I would definitely recommend the Vertex 2.

for comparison here is another drive that's good, but i would still get the ocz.

good luck!  you will love the overall performance increase!

Thanks for the info/suggestions.

really wonder if I'll notice any change coming off of 2 10.000 rpm drives in raid 0, though.    I'll post my experiences anyway whenever I get the SSD.

on Jan 17, 2011

I noticed a good amount of diffence coming from (2) 10k raptors.

I noticed a helluva difference from my wifes laptop, 5900 rpm drive lol.

hmm... well that's interesting then.  Good stuff.

pacov make sure you are keeping non-essential data on the RAID0 or mirroring it on to a slower array. I have lost 3 RAID0 arrays with good quality drives (well not the best but most recent was seagate). Not sure what the kill rate of SSD's are as I still don't think they are worth the cash except for a single OS drive. Most modern MB's can handle RAID5 or something with redundancy. Anyway my point is the time I have ever saved with a personal use RAID0 has been blown in lost data and fecking around after the loss...But then - you prolly thought of this already...

on Jan 17, 2011

software raids are faster and more reliable than motherboard "fake raids".

on Jan 17, 2011

Ok I didnt know that as I always thought h/w was faster than s/w. However, i was actually referring to hard drive fails as you are twice as likely to lose your data in raid0.

yeah - I have backups in place to critical data can't be lost, so no worries there.  I'll very likely be using the SSD as my os drive, but will install games, etc, on it.  I keep everything else on another drive and perform weekly backups to an external.

ok well that's vigilant...

Out of interest re my previous post I assume SSD's have better fail rates than traditional mechanical drives. Is this correct?

on Jan 17, 2011

Ok I didnt know that as I always thought h/w was faster than s/w. However, i was actually referring to hard drive fails as you are twice as likely to lose your data in raid0.

If you have a dedicated RAID Controller (hint, they cost several thousand dollars so you probably don't, and they are a PCI card you plug into your motherboard), then hardware RAID is way faster. However, if you're using the fake-RAID chip that is found on most motherboards then you lose speed. The fake-RAID chip doesn't do any of the hard work, it just tells your CPU to do it... the same CPU that would do it if you were using a software raid. So it just adds overhead.

That said, fake-RAIDs of types 1 and 5 are faster at recovering from failure and better at detecting failure than a software RAID 1 or RAID 5. But if you're doing a RAID 0, you want speed, and software gives you the faster speed.

on Jan 17, 2011

it just tells your CPU to do it... the same CPU that would do it if you were using a software raid. So it just adds overhead.

ok sort of makes sense.

If the fake-RAID directs the cpu to do the work, which is the same as the software RAID then how does this add overhead? Presumably the software RAID has to run residently under your OS which would take up both RAM and load the cpu. Whereas the "fake" RAID does what in its place? Surely something that is h/w based cant use as many resources as software doing the same thing? - no?

Another question. How do you get your OS installed onto a software RAID0 array? For example, as you will likely know, when you install windows onto a RAID0 (a.k.a fake RAID) you have to install the driver prior to install of OS. As you wouldn't have an OS installed how do you get the software array to initialize at this point? Or is this a chicken/egg argument?

on Jan 18, 2011

I == OS

software RAID:

Okay, I need to write/read this file from my hard drive... according to my partition tables, the file system tree is on these blocks on the hard drive. Sweet, I'll just ask the hard drives to give me their halves of the file system tree and then I'll put it together when they return.

Sweet, they gave me the two halves... put it together... okay. So it looks like the file I'm looking for is in block 3421. I'll ask the hard drives to give me their halves of block 3421.

Awesome, they responded. Put it together... and now I have the file!

fake RAID:

Okay, I need to write/read this file from my hard drive. Mr. fake RAID Controller, can you give me the address of that?

Wait, you're not going to just give me the address of that? Instead you're going to tell me HOW to get JUST THAT address myself? Grumble, grumple, okay.

Since I'm so fast that didn't take too long to figure out once the address of what I needed. Looks like it is in block 3421. Wait... I don't know how to read this, it's all compressed and stuff. :Sigh: Mr. fake RAID Controller, can you tell me how to figure this out?

Damn that took forever.

Keep in mind Mr. fake RAID Controller is a 600 MHz processor and it's not exactly fast.

---

Second question, when you create the partitions in the first place you set them up to be software and your OS re-formats it before installing. Linux does this for you automatically (Fedora is notorious for doing it and screwing up on it).

Personally, I'm on a single 80 GB SSD for OS and my current games, and I'm running a RAID 0 for data and old games, and a third, single hard drive for backups, paging files, and my linux OS.

So I just installed Windows on my SSD, told it to ignore my hard drives, then setup the software raid once my OS was installed.

Another large advantage of software raids is that you can "transfer" them. If you have a Windows software raid and you put it into a new machine with a new motherboard, it'll still work. If you have a fake-RAID and you put it into a new machine with a different fake-RAID chip you lose all your data since it won't know how to decrypt it.

on Jan 18, 2011

wow thanks for all the info and taking the time to explain. The ability to "move" software arrays is a big plus I had no idea about as I thought they were all non-transferable.

If you have a dedicated RAID Controller (hint, they cost several thousand dollars so you probably don't, and they are a PCI card you plug into your motherboard), then hardware RAID is way faster.

Surprisingly you can get an adaptec SAS hardware raid card with proc for less then $600.  I think highpoint even makes a $200 one but i'm not going to bother looking for it.

Please note that just because you have a hardware raid card, it may not be a hardware raid.  Some still use your main proc and don't have a dedicated proc for offloading.  These are still faster than mobo raids or pure software raids.

Doggu - failure rates are typically less for SSD's since they aren't mechanical.
