NinkiCZ's Blog
Published on May 16, 2010 By OMG_NinkiCZ In Demigod

Welcome to our clan. We are the biggest and best clan in Demigod, and arguably the only clan with any hope of survival. What is our goal? To get games going without the ridiculous wait times, meet lots of cool people, and last but not least, have lots of fun. If you want a clan based on skill, you won't find one in this game.

Q: Are you the clan leader?

No, absolutely not. GM worked as a democracy, and the same deal goes here - majority rules. I am just your Public Relations (PR) guy. I have noticed that having a solid PR guy does keep the clan intact, and I have made sure I am pretty much accessible and visible as often as I can. I am on msn, xfire, skype, facebook and vent. If you need to find me, you probably will find me and of course I'll allow you to find me. Just ask if you're interested.

Q: What is the recruitment process?

There is no recruitment process, we will accept anyone who wants to join. Just add the tag, hop onto vent, say Hi and I'll add you on here. If you want I can serenade your entrance to the clan with a song of your personal choice, but it must be Top 40.

Q: Are there any rules?

1. Be nice, be respectful of others. I understand trash talking is part of the game for some, but please don't extend it to something personal. It's just a game after all.

2. Unless there is an agreement among the players in the game, please play balanced games. I understand that completely balanced games are probably not possible at the moment, but try to make it as balanced as possible.

3. Have fun!

If there are anymore questions, feel free to ask away!

Here are the current members of OMG (in alphabetical order):

OMG_awuffleablehedgie (a.k.a. OMG_BlackHatHedgehog)

So I used to refer to him as waffles, because I always thought his name was supposed to relate to waffles. Apparently, I was wrong. He's wuffleable - which means huggable apparently. I'm not sure how a hedgehog is huggable, but I guess it is in his world. Hedgie is his nickname, and he's probably the coldest person in this clan, but once you get used to his cold exterior, he turns out to be a really nice guy. He just has these awkward mood swings, where he's super energetic around 10pm EST, and then after 12am, he tends to be super cynical, and then after 3am he turns on his seductive bedroom voice. If you feel offended by him, don't be, because he's just a hedgehog. If you have any questions about any statistical stuff in Demigod, Hedgie knows all. It's actually kinda scary.

OMG_Blackmage (a.k.a. OMG_synnworld)

OMG-CaptainTaco

Taco was an important addition to the clan because he provides the comic relief for everyone. Just look for his posts and you will instantly know what I mean. He likes to describe himself as a terrible DG player, but he only says that just so his opponents will let their guard down and then Taco can strike. I always knew he was a sneaky guy, right when I saw his Pedobear avatar. As you can tell from his name, he loves Tacos but I'm not sure how strong that love is. In fact, none of us really know if his love for Tacos is stronger than tacoguy's. That is a question up for further discussion.

OMG_Defenz

A player from Vancouver. That's all I really know so far but if you're Canadian then that automatically makes you cool.

OMG-dontforgetyourpeanuts

I have a feeling this guy is loaded.

OMG_Epiphenomenon

Epi is what we all call him, so I suppose that's his nickname. He's the brains of the group, Mr.PhD in computer science. I will be joining him in September (hopefully if I survive the summer) but until then he is above me academically. I shall be your colleague soon Epi! He is the voice of reason. He's very mature and civilized, so I'm not really sure why he's a gamer (haha juust kidding). He is currently my academic advisor, even though he never agreed to it. But who cares, I'm sure he'll agree cause he's a nice guy. If you need academic advice, I suggest you go to Epi.

OMG-howboutnoooo

We all call him Max, because that's his name. He is the dog of the family - and that is not to say that he plays an unimportant role. Dogs are a man's best friend and they are extremely friendly, just like Max. Sometimes when you listen to him you might think he's on LSD, but really he's naturally just like that. He sees the world in magical ways, and he opens up your mind to a whole new world. He's also extremely active - as in he's pretty hyper and is always energetic until around 11pm when he usually goes to bed. I initally made fun of Max for sleeping so early as a teenager, but once I realized how much energy he spends just talking I understand why he's exhausted by the end of the day. If you are feeling down, go talk to Max. He is the guy in the clan who will cheer you up.

OMG__IN1

OMG_Jackho

OMG_Jona

Jona is just Jona. He's the drama queen. Yes, believe it or not I am not the biggest drama queen, he is and he's damn proud of it. From just 3 minutes of talking to him, you'd realize that he likes to put himself on the pedestal, and he does. But even with all that attitude, he's a lot of fun to hang out with. Listening to him on vent always makes my day. He also never rage quits, and never actually gets angry - which is kind of surprising now that I think about it. He also has nice eyes that he cherishes, I'm not sure if that makes a difference.

OMG_Jongalt26

Nickname is Jon. One continuous question that has been floating around is this, "Who would win in a fight against Jon, KAL-EL and yeahneil?" That is an answer no one has been able to answer yet. Those 3 in my mind are the tough trios - but really, they're all actually probably the nicest people in the clan right from the get go. I'm not going to lie, I was scared to talk to them initially but after maybe.. 2 days? I got comfortable with them. Jon to me is a wonderful fatherly figure so he is definitely the father of the family.

OMG_KAL-EL

His name is pronounced just like the way it's spelled. If Jon is our father, KAL-EL is probably our grandfather, except he's not even that old. So why do I call him the grandfather? Because he has so many people that support him that you can't help but admit that there's something about KAL-EL that makes people like him. The answer becomes quite obvious when you engage in a conversation with him. He always keeps it real, and is genuinely friendly. I still have a hard time matching his friendliness with his tough voice but I'm getting there.

OMG_Mybones

A fellow gleek, and although there are some disagreements between us about who the best character in glee is (obviously Rachel, but he refuses to admit her greatness), as long as he is a fan of glee, I am a fan of him.

OMG_NinkiCZ

I'm just your average joe who's Asian. I'm quite boring so let's move on to someone more interesting.

OMG_Nomilarac

OMG_Obiwhan

I've actually always wanted to meet Obi (his nickname) after yeahneil was making fun of my voice and mentioned that he also makes fun of Obi's. When I actually got to meet him, he wasn't quite what I expected because contrary to what yeahneil thinks, he just had a normal voice. Obi is one of the few that makes me literally LOL. I sometimes do wonder if he's telling me the truth about his age though. You'd understand if you've known him long enough. He is the joker. No, not the joker from Batman, but an actual guy who makes jokes. However, his jokes are NSFW - Not Safe For Work, so be careful.

OMG_pacov

There really isn't much to say about pacov because for anyone that comes to these forums, you really can't miss his name. I've never gotten to know him on a personal level, but from my encounters with him he's quite a wonderful person. I consider him the father of Demigod, as do most people I'm sure because he plays such an active role in this community. I've always wanted to get to know you myself and I'm glad that the opportunity has arrived. I shall definitely update this introduction after we become familiar with each other. I also did not think you were the type to listen to Ke$ha. From your posts, I always thought you were more the old skool type - so there's definitely lots of things for me to learn.

OMG_Pa1nKi11er

This is irek, yo.

OMG_RedneckNinja

OMG_DD-shred_demon

If you don't know who shred_demon is then you are definitely missing out. He is actually the real Gentleman. He has a beautiful Scottish accent and loves to drink tea. He cannot live without his tea. He is also extremely skilled with his use of emoticons (the best in DG?) and we all have lots to learn from him. I've never heard him get angry, he's always smiling in my mind and he always puts a smile on my face. Therefore, if you are feeling down, talk to shreddy. He is the clan's sun (yes as in the big thing that shines the world), but you'll have to ignore his strong desire to wear a skirt and become a transformer.

OMG_Soccer-mom

I remember seeing the name Soccer-mom on Lagwars and thinking what kind of a person would want to be known as a soccer mom. Although his name is a bit weird, he actually is nothing like his name on vent. First, he's not a mom. Second, he's not even a parent. Third, I'm not even sure if he likes soccer. He's actually one of the younger guys on vent but surprisingly is one of the most mature guys on there too. I suppose it has to do with the fact that he studies physics (which I think is absolutely amazing because I suck at physics). If you want to delve into a discussion on quantum theory, talk to him.

OMG_SoSick

Another Canadian from Edmonton, which makes him cool. Quite a laid back sorta guy, who's apparently an excellent cook. He kind of reminds me of jaws8you (who seemed to have disappeared somewhere) but without the sighing and he also never gets mad. He is a great guy to play games with because he's a great listener, always calm and even takes responsibility for his mistakes - which is quite a rare sight in Demigod, and even in life. He has almost made drastic improvements over these weeks and I'm sure he'll be excellent in no time.

OMG_Splitshadow

Don't be fooled by his age. Kids his age should be listening to Justin Bieber and Miley Cyrus, yet he chooses to listen to Proud Mary by CCR. He likes to blame me for not being on vent, when in fact I am always on and I do pm him from time to time yet he chooses to ignore my messages, probably from Maccilia's terrible influence. He says he can tell a lot about you from your voice, so you should ask him for a personality diagnosis if you're interested.

OMG_Teseer

Everytime I talk to Teseer on vent, he seems like a completely different person. If you look over his posts you can tell that most of the time he's under the influence of some sort of substance, which could explain why he's a different person each time. While he sounds like a tough dude, he's not aggressive at all and I don't think I've ever heard him get mad. He also has this disgusting passion for TB, it's kind of to the point where it's a bit obsessive in my opinion. If you have any questions about TB, ask this man. Provide him with TB replays and he'll be very pleased.

OMG_Zalera (a.k.a. OMG_Sol)

He's barely on so how am I supposed to know anything about him. All I know is that he pops up in the forums once in a while and he seems to be BFFs with Splitshadow.

OMG_Zelax_

OMG_Zex (a.k.a. Cowbuttzex)

I always thought cow was a weird guy because he's the only person who seems to get along with Peter, but when you talk to him he's actually quite normal. I think it's because he's very accepting of everyone, as you can tell from being our first ever member of the week. If you don't know who to talk to when you come onto vent, the first person I would suggest is cow, because he's very considerate and would do his best to include you in games. He's also very encouraging and I think he plays a vital role in merging the members of the clan together.

Well. Brad owns 60% of the company. It's not a stock-traded company He makes damn good money (have you seen his car!)

That said, I believe that they were intending to have one game team work on the expansion pack (and then, after the first is released, an entirely new game) while the original team patched up Elemental, release free content, and then worked on the second expansion pack after the first two years or whatever.

This is what Relic does with Dawn of War II. They have two teams, one which does patching and the other which does development for the next game or expansion.

Anyway, Elemental did not lose Stardock any money. They made back their 3 million dollar investment back before release through pre-orders and retail orders. That said, the past 2 weeks have probably cost Stardock a lot of money, to fix up the poor release.

I believe that Stardock had hired a bunch of newer people with the intention I outlined above, but because they merely "broke even" and with the poor reviews and game reception, the sales revenue won't be as high as expected. So, he is getting rid of them. That's how I see it, at least.

The people who were fired were not just developers, some were sales/business people as well.

---

I would agree that Frogboy is pretty volatile. But it worked out for him until now. He's done several game releases, and, as he said "every time a bunch of people tell me that the game is not ready for release. But it always is and we make good money from it". Which was what was repeated over and over to beta testers who said that the game wasn't ready (there are a LOT of people who are Stardock-lovers on this forum that protect SD with their life. I think us Demigod players are a little disillusioned since our game didn't get the same support other SD games got).

I did proclaim a bit about the Release Candidate being pushed to beta testers so they could do another hardware check. Additionally, creating a better system for creating bugs (pastebin isn't good :/ ). Hopefully he learned from that...

and on it goes... taken from joystiq.com

The "consequences" of Elemental's "disastrous" launch were swift as Stardock CEO Brad Wardell has confirmed layoffs at the company. ShackNews reported yesterday that those let go included developers, designers, and salespeople working on Elemental. Wardell stated in his post on the subject that these are the first layoffs to the company since 1998, while elaborating, "Elemental's revenue was anticipated to provide the revenue both for our main games team's next project as well as a second team. Unfortunately, that is unlikely to happen so we've had to start laying people off."

Joystiq has been informed by a source that this is only the first round of layoffs at Stardock and that the final count will be about 20 people. We've also been told the "games team itself is/was only 15 people big," so the layoffs will affect others at the company and outside contract workers. Survivors of the cuts will allegedly include the game's producer, art lead, and two lead developers. The source claims, "All of the posts [Wardell] has made in our public forums about how the games team is funded by our commercial software development and that Elemental was not rushed out the door for monetary reasons is a lie. These people are getting laid off due to poor sales and Stardock's inability to pay back the capital investors that funded Elemental's development."

I can only assume that the "source" is someone that got cut lose...

No nightly rant from pacman makes nom a sad panda

on Sep 05, 2010

Thundercles
To Pacov and Anyone Else Still Playing During Demigod's Death Throes:  I got a $100 dollar poker tourney to go to in town but I haven't played Holdem in like 8 months so I'll probably be out pretty quick... just an excuse to drink a few beers and chat with a few old friends.  So I'll probably be playing some Demigod for the next few days so hopefully there might be a few of you around for some random ass games?

About The Rant:  I only know Stardock from my experiences with Demigod so I'm not the expert on how the company operates but this Brad fellow has seemed rather... um... would volatile be the word?  It seems that everyone with any sort of passion for Demigod who worked at GPG was fired well before the release of the game, and it must have been a rather frustrating experience for Stardock to have to constantly twist arms to get support for the game they were publishing... probably a very different dynamic than the one they have with Ironclad?

Anyway, it doesn't seem that Brad is a big fan of learning from his mistakes.  Wasn't Demigod released without a large enough beta test as well?  Seems like a nice enough guy... maybe a little hot and cold sometimes, but I wish him and his company success... but it doesn't look like he's learned the lesson of not to get too personally vested in his projects.  Very nice of you to offer pro bono common sense advisement, but in my experience, people without common sense rarely listen to people who do have it.  Kind of a catch-22.
this is like the first rule of being commercial artist.

Ok - rant.

Here's the original post that I copied and pasted from joystiq.com

These people are getting laid off due to poor sales and Stardock's inability to pay back the capital investors that funded Elemental's development.

Brad apparently got in touch with joystiq and the same post was updated with this.  All of the quotes from the "source" were redacted.  Note the 2nd paragraph's removal:

The "consequences" of Elemental's "disastrous" launch were swift as Stardock CEO Brad Wardell has confirmed layoffs at the company. Shacknews reported yesterday that those let go included developers, designers, and salespeople working on Elemental. Wardell stated in his post on the subject that these are the first layoffs to the company since 1998, while elaborating, "Elemental's revenue was anticipated to provide the revenue both for our main games team's next project as well as a second team. Unfortunately, that is unlikely to happen so we've had to start laying people off."

Wardell contacted Joystiq to say, "We obviously have had technical issues on launch that we are paying for in reviews and weakened sales, but as anyone in our QA can tell you - and I've interviewed them post-launch - we thought the game was ready which merely shows, I think pretty obviously, that we will need to change the way we do QA on major new releases as well as how we handle our own betas."

The executive concludes, "It aggravates me to no end that there's often very little connection between the myriad of poor decisions made at the executive level - including myself at the top - and the people who end up losing their jobs. But my job isn't to dispense economic justice. My job is to try to keep as many people employed as possible and make sure our customers are taken care of."

So, that makes me wonder if the "source" was just total bs or actually portrayed a more accurate picture.  I don't there will be more posts from the "source" so the point might as well be moot.  Interesting that joystiq redacted their statement after talking to brad.  So either he set them straight or something else.  Oh well.

The rest of my rant for the night is over here:  http://forums.demigodthegame.com/395485/page/3/#2759169

edit - I decided to ask SD for a refund on elemental due to performance issues tonight.  I assume it will be a full refund as it simply runs slow late game and crashes quite a bit then too, but I'll wait and see.  At the very least, SD has some good policies in the gamers bill of rights.  I might pick up the game again in a few months, but as it is, I wait for a patch - I play a game - I decide there are too many problems - I wait for a patch - I play a game - I blahblah.
